How Much Should an Auto Detailer Spend on Ads?

Most auto detailing shops should start Meta Ads at $30 to $50 a day, which is $900 to $1,500 a month, and the right number is not a percentage of revenue — it is worked backwards from what one customer is worth. If your average job is $300 and you close 60% of qualified leads, you can afford roughly $30 to acquire a customer and still clear a healthy return. That sets your budget, not a rule of thumb.

Why "10% of revenue" is the wrong way to set it

The percentage rules get passed around because they're easy, not because they work. A mobile detailer doing $8,000 a month with $300 jobs and a shop doing $8,000 a month with $1,800 ceramic coating packages need completely different budgets, because the value of one new customer differs by 6x. The percentage is blind to the only number that matters.

    Work it backwards instead

    Four numbers, in order:

    1. Average order value. What a real job actually invoices, not your best one.
    2. Margin. For most detailing work, labour and product leave roughly 75%.
    3. Your target return. If you want 3.5x on profit, divide the profit by 3.5. That is the most you can pay to get a customer.
    4. Your close rate — measured, not guessed. Most owners estimate high. Count the last 30 leads.

A $300 job at 75% margin is $225 profit. At a 3.5x target that allows about $64 to acquire the customer. At a 60% close rate, that means you can pay about $38 per qualified lead. If your cost per lead comes in under that, spend more. If it comes in over, the problem is the offer or the follow-up, not the budget.

The mistake that wastes more money than the budget ever will

Speed. A lead that gets a reply in under five minutes converts several times better than one answered the next morning, and most shops answer when they're out of the bay. Doubling the ad budget while leads sit for six hours just buys more cold leads. Fix the response time first, then raise spend.

What a first month realistically looks like

Weeks one and two are learning: the platform needs conversion data before it optimises, and early cost per lead is not your real cost per lead. By week three, if the offer and the follow-up are right, cost per lead usually settles 30-50% below where it started. Judge the account at day 30, not day 5.
