What Is a Ceramic Coating Customer Actually Worth?

A ceramic coating customer is worth considerably more than the coating invoice, because a coating creates a maintenance relationship that a one-off detail does not. If you only price your ads against the first job, you will underbid for the best customers you can get.

The first invoice is not the number

A coating is the one service in detailing where the customer has a reason to come back on a schedule. They have spent real money protecting the paint, the warranty usually depends on maintenance, and they now care about how the car is washed. That is a completely different customer from someone who bought an interior clean once.

So the question is not what did the coating pay. It is what does this person pay me over the next two years.

    Work out your own number

Three inputs, all of which you already have.

The coating itself. Your real average, not your top package.

The maintenance cycle. How often a coated customer comes back, and for what. Many shops run a maintenance wash every few months at a fraction of the coating price.

How long they stay. Two years is a reasonable window to plan against, and it is short enough that you are not fooling yourself.

Worked through as an illustration: a $1,200 coating, plus a maintenance wash every four months at $120, is $1,200 plus six washes at $120 over two years - about $1,920. The first invoice was 62 percent of the relationship.

Run it with your own figures. The point is not the example, it is that the number is bigger than the invoice and you probably have never calculated it.

    What that changes

It changes what you can afford to pay to acquire one. If you price acquisition against a $1,200 job you will set one ceiling. If you price it against the real two-year value you can pay meaningfully more for the same customer - which means you can outbid shops who are still budgeting off the first invoice, for the same traffic, in the same town.

It also changes which ads you should be running. If coating customers are your most valuable relationship, cheapest-wash-in-town ads are actively buying you the wrong people. The leads look fine on a report and never turn into anything.

    The part most shops skip

None of this works if nobody ever asks the customer to come back. A maintenance cycle that exists on your price list but not in anyone's calendar is not revenue, it is a theory. The shops that actually collect this have something that reaches out at the right interval - a text, a reminder, a booked slot before the car leaves.

That is usually the gap. Not the pricing, not the ads. The asking.

    Where to start

Pick your last ten coating customers and work out what each has actually paid you since. That one afternoon tells you whether you have a maintenance business or just a coating business, and it sets the real ceiling on what you can spend to get the next one.
