What Should a Window Tint Shop Pay Per Lead?

Most window tint shops can pay somewhere between $15 and $35 for a qualified lead - but the useful number is not a range, it is the one you calculate from your own job value and close rate. A shop averaging $350 a car can afford roughly four times what a shop averaging $90 on two front windows can, and no industry benchmark knows which one you are.

Why tint is different from detailing

Tint has a tighter price band and a faster job. A full-car tint is usually a two to four hour job with a predictable ticket, where detailing runs from a $90 maintenance wash to a $2,000 correction. That means your average order value is more stable than a detailer's, which is good news, because it makes the per-lead math more reliable once you work it out.

It also means the trap is different. Detailers get burned by averaging a huge range. Tint shops get burned by quoting the cheapest line on the menu in their ads, then paying for leads who only ever wanted two windows.

Work it back from the job

    Four numbers, in this order.

Average order value. What a real invoice actually says, across the last thirty cars. Not the full-car ceramic price you wish everyone bought.

Margin. For most tint work, film and labour leave roughly 65 to 75 percent.

Your target return. If you want to clear 3.5x on profit, divide the profit by 3.5. That is the most you can spend to acquire one customer.

Your close rate, measured and not guessed. Count the last thirty leads and how many booked. Almost every shop owner estimates this high.

Worked through: a $350 average ticket at 70 percent margin is $245 of profit. At a 3.5x target that allows about $70 to acquire the customer. At a 50 percent close rate, that means about $35 per qualified lead. If your cost per lead is coming in under that, you have room to spend more. If it is coming in over, the problem is usually the offer or the follow-up, not the budget.

The close rate is where the money hides

Moving your close rate from 40 percent to 60 percent does not just win more jobs, it raises the amount you can afford to pay per lead by half, which lets you outbid the shop down the road for the same traffic. That is why we spend time on follow-up scripts and not only on ads. Two shops with identical ad accounts and different close rates are not in the same auction.

What to do if your cost per lead is too high

    In order:

Tighten who the ad is for before you touch the budget. A tint ad that leads with a price gets price shoppers; one that leads with the problem - heat, glare, interior fade, a kid in the back seat - gets people who want it solved.

Check that your form is not asking for more than it needs. Every extra field costs you leads.

Then look at speed. A lead that waits six hours for a reply is not the same asset as one answered in five minutes, and a lot of shops conclude their leads are bad when what they actually have is a response-time problem.

Only after those three should you decide the number is genuinely too expensive.

What a first month looks like

Weeks one and two are the platform learning, and early cost per lead is not your real cost per lead. By week three, with the offer and the follow-up right, it usually settles well below where it started. Judge the account at day thirty, not day five.
